While the all-new GSX-R1000R was Suzuki’s big ticket unveil at the Intermot this year, they have also shown the new, updated V-Strom 1000 and V-Strom 650 (and their respective ‘XT’ variants) in Cologne. The V-Strom 1000, Suzuki’s flagship ‘adventure’ bike, gets revised styling and an all-new ‘Motion Track Brake System,’ which combines information from the machine’s inertial measurement unit (IMU) and wheel speed sensors to optimise brake pressure when the vehicle is leaned over, as well as in a straight line. The new cornering-ABS system also automatically applies pressure to the rear brake when front brake pressure rises to a certain level.The three-mode traction control system from the previous generation model remains unchanged.
The 2017 V-Strom 1000 also gets Suzuki’s easy-start system, which doesn’t require the clutch lever to be pulled in to start the bike, and needs just one push of the starter button for instant starts. Then, there’s the new windscreen, with height and angle adjustment to suit a larger cross-section of riders, while hand guards and engine cowling become standard equipment on both the V-Strom 1000 and the more off-road-oriented V-Strom 1000XT. And while the V-Strom 1000 gets 10-spoke, cast-aluminium wheels, the V-Strom 1000XT rides on wire-spoke wheels and DID rims that are more suited to off-road use.
The new Suzuki V-Strom 1000 and 1000XT are both available in black, white and yellow, the last colour scheme being offered in homage to Suzuki’s DR range of Paris Dakar rally bikes from the 1990s. The “Champion Yellow” V-Strom 1000XT even gets gold anodised rims, the kind that are seen on Suzuki’s championship-winning motocross range.A vast range of accessories are available for both machines, with the V-Strom 1000’s integrated luggage updated with a new, larger capacity top-box. Other accessories include higher and lower seats, fog lamps and engine bars. Both bikes are expected to hit Suzuki showrooms early next year.
For those who want a lighter, more manageable adventure bike, Suzuki have the V-Strom 650 and V-Strom 650XT, both of which are powered by a Euro 4-compliant 645cc V-twin that produces 70bhp at 8,800rpm and 62Nm or torque at 6,500rpm.New on both variants is Suzuki’s low-rpm assist system, which automatically raises engine speed when pulling away from a standing start, and the new easy-start system first seen on the GSX-S1000 range. There’s also a switchable two-mode traction control system for additional peace of mind. The bikes styling cues are borrowed from the bigger V-Strom 1000, which many riders are likely to appreciate.
As you might expect, the V-Strom 650XT, which is more off-road oriented among the two, gets more equipment as standard, including wire-spoke wheels, lower cowling for additional protection and hand guards. Bits like integrated luggage, a centrestand, touring screen and heated grips are all available as optional extras for both 650s, and the bikes will be in Suzuki dealerships early next year.
Another interesting Suzuki reveal at the Intermot this year is the new GSX-S750, which follows in the footsteps of its bigger brother, the GSX-S1000 and borrows its engine from the K5 GSX-R750. Suzuki say that the K5 GSX-R750 engine was selected for the new GSX-S750 due to its mounting angle, which is closer to vertical than the current GSX-R750 engine, and consequently helps achieve the short wheelbase desired in a naked sportsbike.
With 114bhp at 10,500rpm and 81Nm at 9,000rpm, the 2017 GSX-S750 boasts more power and torque than the outgoing GSR750. There’s also three-mode traction control, ABS, an easy-start system and low-rpm assist function that were earlier seen on the GSX-S1000. According to Suzuki, “The GSX-S750 is aggressively styled, in keeping with the GSX-S family, with sharp lines and angles, and a belly pan as standard fitment.” The bike will be in Suzuki dealerships by early 2017.
