2014 BMW R1200RT unveiled at the EICMA

The 2014 BMW R1200RT looks rather good...

For fans of the Boxer-twin, BMW have unveiled the new R1200RT touring bike at the EICMA motorcycle show in Milan, Italy. “The initials RT have always been synonymous with supremely comfortable, highly dynamic touring on two wheels. With the new R1200RT, BMW Motorrad is once again showing how things are done when it comes to fusing effortless travel abilities with sporty performance,” says a press release from BMW.

Based on the 1170cc Boxer-twin that also powers the R1200GS, the BMW R1200RT’s engine kicks out 125 horsepower at 7,750rpm and 125Nm of torque at 6,500 revs. In modifying the engine for use on the new R1200RT, the centrifugal masses of both the crankshaft and the alternator were increased, resulting in smoother running. A longer secondary transmission ratio has also been used, to keep the revs lower. Stability control (ASC) and two riding modes (rain and road) are standard on the bike, while Riding mode Pro (which offers the ‘dynamic’ riding mode in addition to the other two) and hill start control are optional extras. Another optional extra is the gear shift assistant pro, which allows clutchless upshifts as well as downshifts.

If you thought that’s a lot of optional extras, wait, there’s more – you can add semi-active dynamic electronically adjustable suspension (ESA) and LED daytime running lights to your bike by paying more, though an adjustable windshield, 5.7-inch multi-function TFT colour display and BMW Motorrad Pro onboard computer are standard equipment. New colours for the 2014 BMW R1200RT include metallic blue, gray and metallic brown. Prices, TBA.
