Troy Bayliss: “I thought I’d start waving people past…”

Troy Bayliss admits he postponed getting a vasectomy for years, because he was scared of losing his 'killer instinct.' Now, he's been snipped and is fast as ever...

Australian motorcycle racer, Troy Bayliss, who raced in MotoGP and World Superbikes between 1997-2008, and who won the World Superbikes championship in 2001, 2006 and 2008, retired at the end of the 2008 WSBK season. And like some of his fellow ex-racers, he can’t seem to stay retired. Now 42 years old, Bayliss stays race-fit by riding a bicycle for up to 150km a day (!) and, back in 2010, he even made an announcement about making a comeback with his former employers, Ducati. Bayliss didn’t ultimately come back to professional motorcycle racing, though he hasn’t stopped thinking about it yet.

‘I still have heaps of issues about stopping. If I’d stopped with broken legs and whatever, it would have been easy,’ said Bayliss, speaking to Mat Oxley in a recent interview. ‘It’s so hard. It won’t be long before I start testing the new Ducati for 2012 and I know that if it’s any good, I’m going to have big problems trying not to race again. That’s why I keep myself in form, because you never know what’s around the corner. I know I can go back and win easily,’ adds Bayliss.

In the interview which he gave to Mat Oxley, Bayliss says he promised his wife Kim that he’s stop racing at the end of 2006 and then managed to ‘scam’ another few years of racing. Today, almost three years after he actually retired, he’s still itching to get back to speed on two wheels. ‘The biggest thing I miss is winning. The bad thing is that the feeling [of winning a race] only lasts for a day or two and then you want another one. It’s like a bad drug,’ says the ex-world champ.

Bayliss’ commitment to winning races is intense, but it also has a more humorous side to it. The Aussie was so scared of losing his ‘killer instinct’ that he actually postponed a vasectomy for many years. ‘I thought I’d start waving people past and drinking tea. I finally had the snip three months ago, and I still love my coffee, and I still love winning,’ he says.

If there’s a lesson in this for all of us, well, it can only be that a vasectomy doesn’t slow you down. And as for getting back to racing, we honestly believe Bayliss should learn to stay retired. After all, his fans wouldn’t want him making the kind of comeback which Michael Schumacher has made in F1, would they?
