New and improved: 2011 Aprilia RSV4R APRC

With the addition of APRC on the cheaper 'R' version, it's now become even harder to choose between the Aprilia RSV4 and the mighty BMW S1000RR

The filtering down of technology – from high-spec, expensive, limited-edition homologation-special sportsbikes to lower-spec, more affordable machiney – is an inevitable process. Last year, the only superbike in Aprilia’s lineup that had traction control was the RSV4 Factory APRC Special Edition. This year, the vastly more affordable RSV4R also gets the APRC (Aprilia Performance Ride Control) system, the Noale-based company’s high-tech traction control system that can be adjusted at eight levels. Unlike other motorcycle traction control setups, APRC is a self-calibrating system that automatically adapts to different types of tyres and wheelie control, starting assistance and electronic gearbox settings. Max Biaggi’s bike for the street? Yes, almost!

Apart from the addition of traction control, the 2011 Aprilia RSV4R APRC also gets an improved lubrication system for its 999cc, 65-degree V4 engine, and closer spaced gears for better acceleration. The new, lighter exhaust features an advanced butterfly valve management system to suit the ride-by-wire mapping, for improved breathing and efficiency throughout the RPM range. And the bike’s wheels are now lighter, for a significant reduction in unsprung weight. That, along with fully adjustable suspension components from Sachs, should definitely result in improved handling.

Last year, Revvin’ Kevin Schwantz tested the Aprilia RSV4 Factory against the BMW S1000RR and the new MV Agusta F4, and said if he had to choose between the three, he’d take the RSV4. We wonder what he’d have to say about the new and improved RSV4R with APRC…? :-)

A 'GMG' is all very well, but we wish Moto Guzzi were doing a street version of their 1950s V8-engined racebike for their 90th Anniversary celebrations...!

Established in March 1921, Moto Guzzi are celebrating their 90th Anniversary this year and Piaggio, present owners of this famous (if a bit quirky…) Italian motorcycle brand, have announced a special edition of the Giornate Mondiali Guzzi (GMG), which will be held in Mandello del Lario in mid-September this year.

More than 20,000 Guzzi fans are expected to attend the 90th Anniversary GMG, where the company will also launch the new 2012 Stelvio 1200 8V and 1200 NTX, and the Norge GT 8V. The new California and V7 Scrambler, unveiled in Monte Carlo in February this year, will also be showcased at the GMG.

Here, at Faster and Faster, we wish Moto Guzzi a very happy birthday. We love some of their bikes – machines like the 1980s 850 Le Mans and the 1950s 500cc V8-engined GP racebike. And while we don’t believe every Italian motorcycle manufacturer has do their own version of the 1198SP or the RSV4 Factory, we do hope Guzzi will do a slightly more performance-oriented machine at some time in the near future.

This one-off JPS-edition RSV Factory looks fabulous!!

Harking back to the days of tobacco sponsorship and the glory days of F1 racing in the 1970s and ’80s, the black-and-gold John Player Special colour scheme was also seen on the rotary-engined Norton F1 in the early-1990s. And apparently we aren’t the only ones who loved that super-cool JPS paintjob – DG Company, a Piaggio shop based in Tokyo, have come up with the Aprilia RSV4 Factory that you see here, painted in those evocative JPS colours. We love it!

The bike looks good and that Aprilia V4 sounds awesome...

...and JPS cigarettes were pretty special too, back in the '70s!

Sure, it isn’t the full monty 1198SP, but with its 140-horsepower Testastretta L-twin, the 2011 Ducati 848 Evo probably packs more performance than most riders can use on the street. Or on the track, for that matter. For about £10,695 (US$), the 848 Evo is one hell of a way to get around.

Now, what if you had to pick a four-wheeled equivalent to the Evo? We’d say the brand-new Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Coupe just might be that car. It’s 6.3-litre V8 engine produces 457bhp – enough to propel the car from zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds and on to an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h. Mercedes haven’t announced pricing yet but then, if you have to ask, you probably won’t be able to buy one anyway.

The video here has been produced by AMG, who had announced a marketing tie-up up with Ducati in November last year. Hot chick on a Ducati 848 Evo racing some dude who drives the new C63 AMG? It’s all a bit gratuitous, but we’re not complaining… :-D

Bridgestone extends MotoGP deal by three years, ropes in Rossi as development rider

The Doctor will now also work closely with Bridgestone towards developing their hyper-sports tyres for high-performance streetbikes. Guess we'd all be buying Battlax rubber now!

The Bridgestone Corporation has announced that it has signed a new three year deal with Dorna Sports, which will see it continue as the official tyre supplier to the premier class of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) MotoGP World Championship. The new contract, which extends from 2012 – 2014, means that Bridgestone will continue to provide tyres and technical support to every team and rider on the premier class grid when the MotoGP championship goes from 800cc to 1000cc engines next year.

‘I am proud that we are able to demonstrate our ongoing commitment to MotoGP by extending our participation as official tyre supplier to the premier class with a new three-year deal. Bridgestone has a very rich heritage in the leading motorsport categories across the world, and MotoGP represents a significant part of this heritage,’ said Mikio Masunaga, Vice President and Senior Officer Member of the Board at Bridgestone. ‘I am encouraged that we can continue what has been a very successful relationship with the premier class of motorcycle road racing over the past nine years. I would like to thank the riders, the FIM, Dorna, the MSMA and IRTA for their support, in particular over the last two years as official tyre supplier. I believe our involvement in MotoGP will enable us to continually improve the safety and performance of our consumer tyres,’ he added.

Speaking of consumer tyres, Bridgestone has also roped in Valentino ‘The Doctor’ Rossi as their motorcycle tyre development advisor. Under an agreement that was signed between Bridgestone and Rossi in February this year, Rossi will work with Bridgestone alone as a professional rider – his MotoGP team and sponsors will not be involved in the deal.

Rossi’s role, as an advisor, will include his evaluation and opinions on the performance of Bridgestone motorcycle tyres, particularly in the hyper sport, racing and sport touring sectors. Bridgestone in turn will use his input in tyre development to deliver road tyres with better performance and improved safety margins.

Valentino Rossi is a great ambassador for our company. By having advice and recommendations of the greatest motorcycle competitor of all time, we will ensure that we bring the best new Battlax tyres to the market,’ said Takashi Tomioka, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Bridgestone Europe.
