Dolmette: The 24-cylinder chainsaw-powered motorcycle

A motorcycle that's powered by 24 chainsaw engines? Er... why not!!!

We’ve seen various bikes with far-out exotic engines – V4s, V6s, V8s, aircraft radials and what have you. But for sheer outrageousness, the Dolmette you see here might be hard to beat. The bike, which was actually made way back in 2004, is fitted with all of 24 two-stroke Dolmar chainsaw engines, which have been combined in pairs. The end result is twelve twin-cylinder engines that together displace 1,900cc and produce 170 horsepower and 130Nm of torque! The transmission is a five-speed Harley-Davidson unit, which transfers power to the rear wheel via a series of 12 toothed belts.

The twelve Dolmar engines are mounted in two rows of six on either side of the drive belt casing and the individual motors are coupled together in sets of three, via a double-sided drive belt, making up eight modules in all. The individual engines are not rigidly connected – they deliver their power through the centrifugal clutch that is a standard feature of the Dolmar chainsaw.

It seems there’s simply no end to motorcycle specials builders’ insanity… and indeed, their sheer talent and vivid imagination… :-))

Here's another video of the bike in action...

Seriously... man, that looks so dumb on first glance, but watching that guy start those engines one-by-one, all in sequence, gave me a big unexpected smile. That was really cool.

And I'd like to try it, but I bet I'd f*ck it up.

Hey Sameer, I just sent you an email with a link to an article about a bike that's twice as cool as this one

More a practise in engineering just for the hell of it. No doubt it works, but seriously short of grunt. Amusing though.
