Dream Honda Racing-replica Fireblade now available in Japan

Riding Impression: 2008 Bimota Tesi 3D Carbon

With the Tesi, Bimota have stuck to their ‘alternative front-end’ guns for 25 years – no mean feat for such a small company. The work of two Italian engineers, Pierluigi Marconi and Roberto Ugolini, the first Tesi came out in 1983. Today, while the motorcycling world has still not accepted the front swingarm concept, the Tesi, now in its third avatar, still soldiers on regardless.

Last week, the guys at Motociclismo got to the ride the new Tesi 3D, with its new carbonfibre bodywork, during the Bimota Day event, which was held at the Albacete circuit in Spain. Here’s what they had to say about the bike:

The Tesi 3D’s chassis and suspension offer a very neutral setup and very good cornering stability. The bike changes direction quickly and the front end is always very poised, planted – as if it were riding on rails. In fact, the front end feels very similar to that of conventional high-spec racing bikes, with great poise and stability at all times. However, the Tesi 3D’s 95 horsepower engine seems a bit ordinary, especially given that the new DB7 has a 170bhp engine. Then again, the Tesi’s beauty is in the way it handles on the racetrack…

During hard braking, the Tesi 3D’s front end does not dive – the bike stops in a straight line and without any hesitation whatsoever. The front end setup allows you to brake deep into corners and the overall effect is very confidence inspiring.

Finally, the Bimota Tesi 3D is not a motorcycle for the masses. The bike simply isn’t about having the biggest engine or having the maximum amount of horsepower or being the fastest around a racetrack. No, it’s about being an exclusive piece of Italian engineering with 25 years of history behind it. Is the Tesi 3D worth the 30,000 euros (about US$40,500) it costs? Yes.

Isle of Man to host clean, green GP next year

A ‘clean emissions Grand Prix race’…? That’s exactly what’s going to happen at the Isle of Man next year. The TTxGP will be held in 2009, on the legendary Isle of Man TT circuit.

According to the organizers, ‘The planned TTxGP will showcase a diverse range of vehicles capable of reaching Grand Prix race speeds. Racing teams are likely to be backed by international corporations, universities and high tech institutions, all eager to prove their credentials in the brave new world of clean emission transportation.’

The 2009 TTxGP will run alongside the regular Isle of Man TT races in June next year. The race will, according to the organizers, ‘Establish the world’s first clean emission Grand Prix and set the benchmark in environmentally friendly racing excellence.’

‘Although this is a radical departure from conventional racing, the TTxGP is a stand alone race and a concept which encapsulates the spirit of the traditional Isle of Man TT,’ says Azhar Hussain, TTxGP founder. ‘Combining the world’s greatest road racing circuit with state of the art clean emission technologies brings yet another fantastic first for our small but proud nation,’ adds John Shimmin, Minister for the Environment, Isle of Man.

‘The TTxGP is an enormously exciting prospect from an engineering perspective. It comes at a time when we are reaching a tipping point in the search for, and acceptance of, alternative energy sources. The TTxGP provides a fantastic way of promoting and popularizing these new technologies, serving to inspire young engineering professionals to turn their skills to tackling the pressing energy issues of the modern world,’ says Simon Maddison, Technical Director of TTxGP and Fellow of the Institute of Engineering and Technology.

Ruben Xaus to ride BMW S1000RR in WSBK 2009

If he can do that on the Ducati Hypermotard, Ruben Xaus should do all right on the BMW S1000RR in World Superbikes next year...

BMW finally have a rider for their World Superbikes effort, which will kick off next year. Ruben Xaus, who’s been with Xerox Ducati for the last many years, will move to BMW for 2009 and will ride the new S1000RR in the World Superbikes championship. Xaus has signed a two-year contract with BMW.

‘When I met the BMW guys, I was very impressed by their commitment, their passion for racing and their ideas about the future. We discussed how the WSBK project was going and I realised that I wanted to be a part of it straightaway,’ says Xaus. ‘It is not often that you get the chance to start a completely new project, but I am really looking forward to the challenge. Although it's going to be tough racing a new bike, I believe BMW will give me a good bike and great support and that's all I ask for,’ he adds.

‘Ruben is a strong and combative rider, full of enthusiasm and with a passion for racing. This fits our philosophy completely and together we will take on this new challenge. We know that the Superbike World Championship is a very hard and competitive series, but we are not entering it just to make up the numbers – we will be taking part because we want to win! Of course, we are starting with a brand new bike but, together with Ruben, we believe we can progress quickly and maybe surprise a few people along the way,’ says BMW’s Peter Mueller.

The second BMW rider for 2009 has not been finalized, but Troy Corser is said to be one of the main contenders…

Orca’s MotoGP-replica Suzuki GSX-R1000

Based in France, Orca specializes in customized Suzuki and KTM bikes, and this is their newest piece of work – a MotoGP-replica 2008-model GSX-R1000. Apart from the paintjob, the bike has been fitted with various accessories from Rizoma and a Yoshimura exhaust system. Orca are selling the bike for 16,000 euros – about US$25,000.

Face-off: Suzuki B-King vs Yamaha V-Max!

The two big moto-chunkies from Japan – the Suzuki B-King and the Yamaha V-Max will soon be at each other’s throats. We will, of course, have to wait for some time for a full-blown shootout between the two bikes, but let’s take a quick look at how they compare in the specs sheet department.

The Suzuki B-King, which weighs 262 kilos, is fitted with the Hayabusa’s 1340cc, DOHC, 16-valve inline-four that pumps out 160 horsepower. The bike does the quarter-mile in 10.23 seconds, and top speed is about 250km/h. ‘Twist the throttle and it feels as you're piloting an F-18 being flung off the end of an aircraft carrier – wide-open acceleration from a dead stop is that intense,’ says Motorcycle-USA.

The B-King’s twin-spar cast-aluminium chassis and three-piece cast-aluminium swingarm are quite up to the task of handling its 160 horses, and the suspension – 43mm USD fork at the front and monoshock at the rear – are fully adjustable. ‘While cornering, suspension feels both firm and responsive, with plenty of ground clearance, yet cruising down a pothole-laden L.A. street reveals a far plusher ride than that of a GSX-R sportbike,’ says Motorcycle-USA. 

Eight cylinders, 350bhp, 500km/h... bring 'em on!

The 2009 Yamaha V-Max, which was unveiled only recently, has not been tested yet, but on paper at least, the bike seems to have all the right stuff with which to take on the B-King. Compared with the B-King, Mr Max packs a bigger, more powerful engine – a 1679cc, DOHC, 16-valve V4 that produces an astonishing 197bhp. But the V-Max also weighs 307 kilos – 47kg more than the B-King – which somewhat negates its almost 40bhp power advantage over the Suzuki.

The V-Max chassis is also an aluminium twin-spar unit, with a CF die-cast extruded aluminum subframe. There’s a 52mm telescopic cartridge fork at the front and monoshock at the rear – both ends being fully adjustable. And like the B-King, the new V-Max is available with anti-lock brakes.

The Suzuki has an edge on pricing – the B-King costs US$13,000 while the Yamaha V-Max, at US$18,000 is much more expensive. In the next few weeks, we’ll see which bike wins on the dragstrip and in showroom wars. But without waiting for the results, we’d take the V-Max anyway…
