MotoGP: Sete Gibernau to ride again in 2009

Sete Gibernau is back in MotoGP in 2009, with the Onde 2000 Ducati team

After months of speculation, the deal is finally done, and Sete Gibernau will indeed be back in MotoGP next year. Stepping out of (semi-forced?) retirement, the Spaniard will make his comeback with the new Onde 2000 Ducati team, which will be managed by Pablo and Gelete Nieto, sons of the legendary Angelo Nieto.

Now 35 years old, Gibernau has earlier ridden for Honda and Ducati in MotoGP, winning a total of nine races. ‘I am really happy to be back in MotoGP and I’m looking forward to being competitive again. I believe I will come back and be able to fight at the front again. It is going to be a tough challenge, but one I am really looking forward to. It is exciting to be part of this new project and I’m sure we will be capable of getting positive results in 2009,’ says Gibernau.

‘I've come back to enjoy it again and it's a good opportunity for me. That's my main goal – to enjoy riding. I'm still open to learning again, even at 35. I'm going to have to work very hard and I'm ready for that,’ adds Gibernau, who'll start testing the Ducati GP9 by the end of next month. We think he might actually get a podium finish or two in the 2009 MotoGP season. And, certainly, he can’t do any worse than Marco Melandri anyway…
