Oil rig: The Neander Turbodiesel

The Neander Turbodiesel is powered by a 1340cc, twin-cylinder diesel, which makes 195Nm of torque. That's almost twice as much as a Yamaha R1...

“After seven years of extensive development work, working our fingers to the bone and burning out several prototypes, it is finally done: There’s a new sheriff in town!” say Neander, on their website. And indeed, they do have a unique product – the Neander is supposed to be the world’s first and only motorcycle with a turbocharged diesel engine!

The Neander is fitted with a 1340cc, air and oil cooled, 8-valve, turbocharged, intercooled, twin-cylinder diesel engine that makes 112 horsepower and an impressive 195Nm of torque at 2600rpm. (Compared with most litre-class superbikes, that’s almost twice as much torque at less than a third of the revs!) The bikes uses belt-drive, has a six-speed gearbox, will accelerate from zero to 100km/h in 4.5 seconds, and hit a top speed of 225km/h. Not bad for a diesel-powered cruiser.

But wait, there’s a price for all this diesel performance – an eye watering, jaw dropping, bank account shriveling US$133,000! That, by the way, is more than what a brand new Porsche 911 Turbo costs. But if you are still interested, you can get more details on The Kneeslider and the Neander website.

Huh??? The 6-speed gearbox makes absolutely no sense. If you have so much torque, which is likely to be in a wide band, then a 2-speed gear box is just fine.
